No. 12 Vulcans post sweep at Edinboro, 9-0

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 1) – The No. 12 Vulcans extended their winning streak to five matches on Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0 victory at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 6-2 overall after registering four victories in four days and 2-0 in league play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 5-7 this season while the matched marked their first divisional action of the season.

The Vulcans swept double play for the second-straight day, losing only a combined five points in three matches. At the first position, the No. 6 tandem of senior Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) and sophomore Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) tallied an 8-2 victory over Oranz Carrillo and Katie Allen. Senior Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and sophomore Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores) collected an 8-1 win at second doubles over RyAnne' Baldwin and Marija Tmusic, while sophomore Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and freshman Lena Dimmer (Wallendorf-Pont, Luxembourg/Lycée Classique) registered an 8-2 victory against Julia Hellstern and Lydia Browne at the third slot.

Cal U clinched the match victory by sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets on Wednesday. At the first slot, No. 23 Shaw earned her team-leading 10th win of the season with a 6-2, 7-6 victory against Hellstern. Dimmer posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over regionally-ranked Carrillo at the second position, while freshman Alice Johns (Northampton, England/Northampton) dealt Tmusic a defeat at third singles by 6-1, 6-2 margin.

At the fourth position, Mikulis registered her first singles win of the spring with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Baldwin. Sarinanana tallied a 6-2, 6-0 win over Allan at the fifth slots, while freshman Katie Olson (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills) collected a 6-1, 6-0 victory at sixth singles against Nevena Kullina.

The Vulcans are off for two days before hosting a non-conference match against Oberlin (Ohio) on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m.
