(Feb. 14) – Playing in its first dual match of the spring season, the No. 12 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team earned one win in doubles play Saturday afternoon while suffering a 7-0 defeat to Towson, a NCAA Division I program and member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
The Vulcans fall to 1-1 this season after winning its lone dual match in the fall. Meanwhile, the Tigers improves to 4-3 overall while playing in its sixth match of the spring.
The tandem of senior
Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) and sophomore
Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) earned a 6-4 win at first doubles over Nicole Shakhnazarova and Lucy Williams. Senior
Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and sophomore
Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores), as well as freshmen duo of
Katie Olson (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills) and
Alice Johns (Northampton, England/Northampton), each narrowly fell 6-4 in their matches at second and third doubles, respectively.
Cal U forced three of six singles matches to a third set against Towson on Saturday. Shaw fell to Sophie Lesage at the first position by a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 count, while Czakon was dealt a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss by Williams at second singles. Freshman
Lena Dimmer (Wallendorf-Pont, Luxembourg/Lycée Classique) was defeated by Shakhnazarova at third singles by a 6-4, 7-5 margin and sophomore
Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) lost by a 6-4, 6-1 count at fourth singles to A.J. Gomer. At the fifth position, Sarinana dropped a 7-5, 6-2 match to Barbora Vasilkova and Johns suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 decision to Renate van Oorschodt at the sixth slot.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Feb. 15, when they return to Morgantown, West Virginia, to face the Mountaineers at 9 a.m.
