Cal U takes split at home invitational

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 12) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team registered a split at its Vulcan Invitational on Friday in the Convocation Center, earning a 3-1 victory against NYIT before suffering a 3-2 loss to Rollins.

With the split, the Vulcans move to 4-2 this season with both of their losses coming in five sets.

Cal U opened play on Friday afternoon with a 3-1 win (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15) against NYIT of the East Coast Conference (ECC). Senior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), who was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, led the team with 11 kills on 46 attempts. Junior Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) added nine kills on a .381 hitting percentage and sophomore Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) tallied seven kills in the victory. The Vulcans featured a trio of players in double-digit assists with a team-high 16 assists by freshman Taylor Solo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford).

Junior Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) set a season high with 28 digs and Miller added 10 digs. Hayes paced the team with seven blocks, while four other players posted at least three blocks in the win.

The Vulcans later dropped a 3-2 contest (16-25, 25-27, 25-15, 25-20, 15-9) to Rollins of the Sunshine State Conference (SSC). Miller registered her fourth kill/dig double-double of the season, finishing with 15 kills and a career-high 23 digs. She also tallied three blocks and three service aces in the loss.

Hayes added 11 kills on a .350 hitting percentage and added seven blocks. After splitting setting duties earlier in the day, Solo directed the offense with 39 assists against Rollins. Rudy led the defensive effort with 25 digs and freshman Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) added 10 digs. Fouzie and fellow junior Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) finished with six and five blocks, respectively.

Cal U concludes play tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Vulcan Invitational when it faces Alderson Broaddus and Cedarville. The two-day event features eight teams from six different conferences with matches played in both the Convocation Center and Hamer Hall.
