CALIFORNIA (Sept. 10) – After tying the score with just over two minutes left in regulation, the Vulcans earned a 3-3 double-overtime tie against No. 21 District of Columbia on Wednesday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team moves to 1-1-1 overall after playing all three games at home. Meanwhile, UDC remains unbeaten this season with a 2-0-1 mark, all on the road.

The Vulcans took an early 1-0 lead at the 5:02-mark when junior transfer Jesse Scheirer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) scored on a header with an assist from sophomore Cory Kuzilla (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek).

Just over 60 seconds into the second half, UDC tied the score at 1-1 on a rebound goal by sophomore Flavio Macedo. Cal U reclaimed the lead at the 78:50-mark on a header by senior Tyler Woolum (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) off a feed from classmate Jeffrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany/SIT Tübingen).

Two minutes later, the Firebirds answered with a game-tying goal from sophomore Felix Angerer on another rebound. UDC took its only lead of the game at the 85:25-mark when junior Moussa Traore capitalized on a pass from Angerer that drew the Cal U goalkeeper to the top of penalty box. The Vulcans responded in the 88th minute when sophomore Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) deflected an indirect kick from Kyei to tie the game at 3-3.

In the first overtime, Cal U managed a shot on goal following a pair of corner kicks in a span of 20 seconds. Meanwhile, the Firebirds registered the only shot on goal in the second overtime.

Senior Shane Donovan (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East) registered a season high with six saves while playing all 110 minutes. UDC goalkeeper Louis Connor finished with four saves on Wednesday.

The Vulcans and Firebirds each finished the game with 15 shot attempts and seven corner kicks.

Cal U continues non-conference play on Sunday, Sept. 14, when it travels to Walsh at 3:30 p.m.
