No. 12 Tennis blanks Seton Hill, 9-0

GREENSBURG, Pa. (April 6) – Playing its third match in as many days, the No. 12 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches on Sunday morning with a 9-0 victory over Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 8-2 overall behind a 4-0 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the league-newcomer Griffins fall to 2-11 this season with a 0-4 record in divisional play.

Cal U swept doubles play against Seton Hill, losing only a combined four games while playing without the All-American tandem of senior Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and junior Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres). Junior Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores) moved up to the first position and earned an 8-1 victory against Megan Hudak and Faith Finoli. At second doubles, freshmen Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) and Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) tallied an 8-2 win over Lauren Duffy and Alisha Torretti. Junior Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) and sophomore Florine Gross (Forbach, France/Lycée Jean Moulin) posted an 8-1 victory at the third slot against Chelsea Pence and Michelle Vawter.

In singles, the Vulcans won all six matches in straight sets with three victories by 6-0, 6-0 counts. Czakon recorded her first career win at the first position, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hudak. Rey posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at the second slot against Finoli and Shaw extended her winning streak to six matches with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Duffy at third singles.

Mikulis registered her 14th victory of the season, defeating Vawter at the fourth slot by a 6-0, 6-0 margin. Sarinana also tallied a 6-0, 6-0 win at fifth singles against Pence and Burrell earned her first singles win of the year by blanking Torretti at the sixth position, 6-0, 6-0.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, April 8, when it travels to face No. 44 IUP in a rematch of last year's PSAC Championship. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
