ERIE, Pa. (March 29) – The No. 12 Vulcans recorded their third Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West victory this week on Saturday evening, posting an 8-1 win against Mercyhurst at the Westwood Racquest Club.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 5-2 this season with a 3-0 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in divisional play while having their seven-match winning streak snapped.
The Vulcans swept doubles for the third-straight match with the match at the first position featuring a pair of regionally-ranked tandems. Senior
Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and junior
Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres), the No. 11 doubles team in the country, posted an 8-4 victory at the first slot against Caroline Bristol and Sarah Baich. At second doubles, junior
Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman
Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores) earned an 8-2 win over Courtney Thompson and Annie Baich. Junior
Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) and sophomore
Florine Gross (Forbach, France/Lycée Jean Moulin) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory at the third position against Katelyn Caniford and Taylor Wedlake.
Cal U earned all five of its victories in singles play on Saturday in straight sets. The No. 5 singles player in the country, Sipkova recorded her 20th win of the season by posting a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the first position against regionally-ranked Bristol. Czakon, the No. 38 player in the nation, recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over Thompson at second singles, while Rey suffered a 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 loss to Sarah Baich at the third slot.
Freshman
Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) tallied a 6-2, 6-1 victory at fourth singles against Annie Baich and classmate
Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wedlake at the fifth slot. Sarinana recorded her 10th win of the year with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the sixth position against Caniford.
The Vulcans return to the courts on Friday, April 4, when they travel to face Big East-member Villanova at 2 p.m.
