No. 12 Vulcans blank Edinboro, 9-0

SOUTH PARK, Pa. (March 25) – In their first action in over a month, the Vulcans posted a 9-0 victory on Tuesday night while opening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play against Edinboro at Glen Creek Tennis Club.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 3-2 this season and 1-0 in divisional play. Meanwhile, Edinboro drops to 8-7 overall and opens league play with a 0-1 mark.

The Vulcans swept doubles play for the first time this spring, dropping only a combined three games. At the first position, the No. 9 pairing of senior Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and junior Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) recorded an 8-0 sweep over the regionally-ranked tandem of Oranza Carrillo and Raquel Holiday. Junior Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores) posted an 8-2 victory at second doubles against Julia Hellstern and RyAnne' Baldwin, while junior Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) and sophomore Florine Gross (Forbach, France/Lycée Jean Moulin) closed the session with an 8-1 win over Megan Cowling and Lydia Browne at the third slot.

In singles, Cal U completed the sweep by winning all six matches in straight sets. The No. 7 player in the country, Sipkova collected a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the first position against regionally-ranked Carrillo. Czakon tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles over Hellstern and Rey posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Baldwin at the third slot.

Freshman Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Holiday and classmate Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Cowling at the fifth slot. Sarinana rounded out play at the sixth position by posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nevena Kulina.

The Vulcans return to action on Friday, March 28, when they host Clarion at the Glen Creek Tennis Club at 12 p.m.
