Vulcans advance past Seton Hill, 74-59

CALIFORNIA (March 1) – Junior forward Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) led four players in double-figures, as the Vulcans defeated Seton Hill 74-59 in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Saturday night at the Convocation Center.
 
The win improves the Vulcans to 18-8 overall and advance to take on second-seeded Gannon on Tuesday, March 1. Meanwhile, the Griffins conclude their first season as a PSAC member at 13-14 overall.
 
Mahady finished the night with game-highs of 19 points and seven rebounds and added four steals in the win. Junior Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) finished with 14 points, four steals and three rebounds, while classmate Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) added 12 points. Freshman Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) chipped in 12 points and senior Kate Seebohm (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) finished with a game-high six assists and added eight points.
 
Seton Hill scored the opening basket of the game and Cal U missed each of its first three attempts from the field, but the Vulcans followed with a 13-5 run that spanned the next four minutes to take a 13-7 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the game. The Griffins responded with a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 20-15 lead with 9:38 left in the first half. Seton Hill was a perfect five-for-five during the stretch compared to the Vulcans who made one of their eight attempts from the field.
 
Cal U found its stroke over the next seven minutes, making six of seven attempts and going on a 17-4 run to take a 32-24 lead with 4:25 left until halftime. Seton Hill out-scored the Vulcans 12-11 down the stretch, including a basket-and-one with one second left before the horn, to cut the Cal U lead to 43-36 heading into the break.
 
The Vulcans came out of halftime with the opening four points of the second half, but the Griffins rattled off a 12-4 run to pull within three at 51-48 with 10:27 left in the game. Cal U ended the run and countered with a 14-4 run over the next 8:31 to take a 65-52 lead with 1:56 remaining in the game. The Griffins went over 10 minutes between field goals during the run and were unsuccessful on all nine attempts while turning the ball over five times. Cal U made 12-of-14 attempts at the free-throw line in the game's final four minutes to seal the victory.
 
Seton Hill shot a higher percentage from the field, converting 48.9 percent (22-of-45) compared to the Vulcans who shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55). The Griffins made four of their five three-point attempts in the first half, but failed to make any of their five attempts in the second half.
 
Cal U flustered the Griffins all game, finishing with 13 steals and forcing 21 turnovers total, while committing only 10 turnovers.
 
Sophomore Kelly Brennan led Seton Hill with 14 points, while senior Katie Gattuso finished with 12 points and six rebounds – both below her season totals.
 
The Vulcans will head to Erie, Pa. on Tuesday, March 4, to take on Gannon in the quarterfinals. The opening tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
