Vulcans edged in final seconds, 69-67

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 8) – The Vulcans led by as many as 18 points in the first half before allowing the game-winning jumper with 3.1 seconds left on Saturday night in a 69-67 loss at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team falls to 9-13 overall and 4-8 in divisional play. The Vulcans and Fighting Scots have now split the regular-season series nine times in the last dozen years. Meanwhile, Edinboro improves to 9-12 this season with a 2-9 record in league action.

Sophomore guard Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) tied for the team lead with 12 points and registered a career-high seven assists on Saturday. He made four-of-eight attempts in the first half before being limited to three points in the second half. The seven assists by Jacubec are the most by a Cal U player this year and also tie the season-best from the 2012-13 campaign.

Junior Alonzo Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) also finished with 12 points and classmate Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) added 10 points off the bench. Fellow junior Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) led the team with eight rebounds and posted seven points, while senior Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) totaled nine points, six rebounds and two steals.

The Vulcans made six of their first seven shot attempts in the opening four minutes on Saturday to take a 12-4 lead. After the teams traded lay-ups, Cal U mounted a 17-5 run over eight-plus minutes to build a 31-13 lead with 6:23 left before halftime.  During the rally, the Vulcans allowed the Fighting Scots to make only 2-of-11 attempts from the field and forced four turnovers. Edinboro then answered with 12-unanswred points to trim the deficit to 31-25 with 1:47 remaining in the half. Cal U countered with a pair of lay-ups to take a 35-25 lead into the break after totaling 24 first-half points from inside the paint.

After three early baskets in the second half, the Vulcans went on a 7-2 run to stretch their lead to 44-31 with 16:36 left to play. Edinboro countered with a 9-2 rally over the next four minutes to trim the deficit to 46-40 before Cal U answered with a 7-2 run to increase the lead at 53-42 with 10:10 remaining. However, the Fighting Scots seized control of the game with a 16-2 rally and claimed their first lead of the game at 58-55 with 4:41 left in regulation. Cal U snapped a six-minute span without a field goal at the 4:07-mark before Edinboro answered with five-straight points to take a 63-58 lead with 2:55 remaining.

Williams made a pair of free-throws with 2:06 left to play before the teams traded baskets on their next possessions with Cal U trailing 65-62 at the 1:15-mark. Both teams made a pair of free-throws before Williams tied the game at 67-67 with 17 seconds left on a three-pointer. Sophomore Henri Wade-Chatman then made the game-winning, pull-up jumper with 3.1 seconds to give the Fighting Scots the 69-67 victory.

Cal U shot over 50 percent in the first half before finishing the game making 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor. In comparison, Edinboro made over 60 percent in the second half and shot a 54.9 clip (28-of-51) for the game. The Fighting Scots held a 31-27 rebounding advantage, while the Vulcans tied their season best with only six turnovers.

Edinboro senior Bryan Theriot finished with his sixth double-double of the season after recording game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Wade-Chatman finished with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists in the win.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 12, when they host PSAC West-leading and No. 9 IUP at 7:30 p.m.
