Women's Basketball cruises past UPJ, 94-65

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 19) – Led by a career-high 23 points from senior guard Kate Seebohm (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) on Senior Day, the Vulcans earned a 94-65 win over Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
 
The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 17-7 overall and 11-4 in conference play. The Vulcans were recently tabbed seventh in the Atlantic regional rankings released on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Lady Cats fall to 6-8 the PSAC West and 9-15 overall and remain in contention for a berth into the PSAC Tournament.
 
Seebohm led the way with a career-high 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field and added five assists and four rebounds in the win. Freshman Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) paced Seebohm with 21 points, while senior Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) and junior Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) each added 14 points.
 
Both teams traded baskets early in the game, leading to a 10-10 tie with 13:23 left in the first half. The Vulcans proceeded to score seven-unanswered points to take the lead, but the Lady Cats answered with a 10-2 run to take a 20-19 lead with 7:52 remaining in the opening half.
 
After shooting 29 percent  (7-of-24) over the first 12 minutes of the game, Cal U commanded the final eight minutes of the half, out-scoring Pitt-Johnstown 24-9 to take a 45-29 lead into the break. The Vulcans shot 53 percent (9-of-17) from the field and converted eight-of-nine attempts from the charity stripe, including 12 points from Antonenko, over that span. Conversely, the Lady Cats committed six turnovers and made three-of-10 attempts from the field.  
 
UPJ scored the opening basket of the second half, but the Vulcans followed with a 12-2 run to open up a 57-34 lead with 14:42 remaining in the game. After the Lady Cats responded with consecutive scores, the Vulcans extended their lead to 66-42 behind a 9-3 run with 12:03 left in regulation. Cal U continued to add to its lead with an 11-2 run to take a 77-47 lead with 6:35 remaining in the game, and out-scored the Lady Cats 15-13 over the final five minutes of the game en route to the win.

The Vulcans finished the game with season highs of 20 steals and 32 turnovers forced. Cal U tallied 46 points off of turnovers in the win.
 
Pitt-Johnstown shot 48 percent (25-of-52) compared to the 45 percent (34-of-74) posted by Cal U, but the Vulcans held the edge in rebounds (39-31) and made 76.7 percent (23-of-30) at the free-throw line.

Senior Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) added seven points giving the Cal U seniors 44 of the team's 94 points. Fellow senior Ryah Gadson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) started the game despite an existing injury, but departed after the opening possession. Hines, Gadson, Antonenko and Seebohm were honored prior to the start of the game for their contributions to the program.
 
The Vulcans are idle this Saturday and will wrap up the regular season next Wednesday, Feb. 26, when they travel to Greensburg, Pa., to face Seton Hill. The opening-tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
