Men's Basketball falls at Clarion, 91-74

CLARION, Pa. (Feb. 15) – Despite a combined 40 points from junior Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) and sophomore Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) on Saturday night, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team suffered a 91-74 loss to Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With their fourth-straight loss, the Vulcans fall to 9-15 overall and 4-10 in league play. Cal U remains in contention for the sixth and final spot in the PSAC Tournament with two games left in the regular season. Meanwhile, Clarion snaps a three-game losing streak to improve to 5-16 this season behind a 3-10 record in divisional action.

Jacubec finished with a career-high 22 points after shooting 8-of-16 from the floor, including six-of-nine from beyond the arc. He scored 17 points behind five three-pointers in the second half on Saturday. The reigning PSAC West Freshman of the Year, Jacubec became the first player with six three-pointers in a game since Kenny Johnson in the 2008-09 season.

Fortune tallied 18 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals while making his first start since Dec. 21. He made six-of-nine attempts from the floor, including four-of-six from three-point territory, and extended his consecutive free-throw streak to 20 attempts.

Junior Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) posted 12 points off the bench and senior Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) registered nine points, four rebounds and a career-high six assists.

Clarion took a 17-11 lead after the opening six minutes with the two teams combining to shoot 11-of-16 from the floor, including five three-pointers. The Vulcans then mounted a 10-3 run, starting with a traditional three-point play by Williams, to reclaim the lead at 21-20 with 10:50 left before halftime. The teams then traded baskets before the Golden Eagles countered with their own 10-3 rally to take a 33-26 lead with 6:17 remaining in the first half. Following a three-pointer by Fortune at the 5:53-mark, Clarion continued to increase its lead with a 13-1 run and eventually took a 46-30 lead into halftime.

The Vulcans started the second half on a 12-6 run after making five-straight shots to open the half and trimmed the deficit to 52-43 with 15:45 left in the game. Clarion countered with an 18-8 rally over a nearly seven-minute span to take a 70-51 lead with 8:54 remaining. Over the next two-plus minutes, Cal U went on a 13-6 run with a trio of three-pointers by Jacubec to trim the deficit to 76-64 with 6:31 left to play. However, the Golden Eagles maintained a double-digit lead after making five-of-seven from both the field and the free-throw line during the final six minutes.

Cal U shot 50 percent in both halves, finishing the game making 26-of-52 attempts and a season-high 12 three-pointers – the most in six years. In comparison, Clarion made 59.6 percent (34-of-47) from the floor and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles held a 28-24 rebounding advantage and scored 42 points from inside the paint.

Junior guard DeMarius Miller scored a game-high 34 points on 12-of-18 shooting after behind held to just three points in the previous meeting against Cal U on Jan. 15. Senior Mike Kromka added 16 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Aaron Johnson finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19, when it hosts league-newcomer Pitt-Johnston on Senior Day at the Convocation Center with tip set for 7:30 p.m.
