CALIFORNIA (Feb. 12) – The Vulcans were defeated by No. 7 IUP 85-47 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
The California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team falls to 9-14 overall and 4-9 in the PSAC West standings. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks, ranked No. 7 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Top 25 poll, avenged a 59-56 loss to Cal U on Jan. 18 and improve to 19-2 overall and 9-2 in divisional play.
Junior
Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) led the Vulcans with 14 points, while junior
Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) and senior
Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) each chipped in eight points.
IUP ran out to a 12-2 lead before the Vulcans responded with consecutive baskets to pull within five at 12-7 with 13:03 left in the first half. The Crimson Hawks kept the pressure on with a 15-5 run over the next seven minutes to extend their lead to 27-12 with 6:39 left in the opening half, and closed the final six minutes by out-scoring the Vulcans 15-10 to take a 42-22 lead into the break.
The Vulcans matched baskets with IUP to open the second half, but the Crimson Hawks scored the next nine-unanswered points to take a 53-24 lead with 16:18 remaining in regulation. IUP out-scored Cal U 32-23 down the stretch to secure the win.
Cal U shot 25.5 percent from the field (14-of-55), including 5-of-20 (25.0 percent) from three-point range. The Crimson Hawks held a sizeable 44-21 advantage on the glass and finished with 25 assists on the night.
IUP had five players score in double-figures, led by a game-high 16 from Jeremy Jeffers.
The Vulcans are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15, when they travel to Clarion. The opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
