Vulcans claim sixth-straight win, 85-56

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 8) – Five players scored in double-figures, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team cruised to an 85-56 win over Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
 
The Vulcans improve to 8-5 overall with the win and wraps up PSAC Crossover play with a 6-0 record against PSAC-East foes. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers fall to 0-14 this season.
 
Junior Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) led Cal U with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals, while classmate Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) paced her effort with 18 points and two assists. Senior Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) totaled 13 points and six rebounds, junior Shanice Clark (Toronto, Ontario/Cederbrae C.I.) added 11 points and nine boards, and senior Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
 
Although it never held the lead in the contest, Mansfield kept the game close through the opening 15 minutes. Cal U never led by more than eight points and the Mountaineers pulled within four, 25-21, with 5:28 left in the first half. The Vulcans out-scored Mansfield 12-8 over the final five minutes to take a 37-27 lead into halftime.
 
After Mansfield scored the opening points of the second half to pull within eight points, Cal U opened up a large lead with a 20-4 run to take a 57-33 lead with 12:49 left in the game. The Mountaineers hit a couple of shots to stop the run, but the Vulcans closed out the game by out-scoring the visitors 24-16 over the final 10 minutes of the game.
 
The Vulcans controlled the glass throughout the game, out-rebounding Mansfield 44-29, which including 23 offensive rebounds. Cal U also held a significant edge in the turnover battle. The Vulcans forced the Mountaineers into 24 turnovers, while committing 11 of their own.
 
Cal U is back in action this Saturday, Jan. 11, when they head to Pitt-Johnstown for a PSAC-West showdown. The opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
