Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) scored a career-high 21 points and junior
Alonzo Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) recorded a double-double on Saturday afternoon, as the Vulcans posted a 68-62 victory at Kutztown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 6-8 overall and earned its first road victory of the year. Meanwhile, Kutztown drops to 3-9 this season and has lost five-straight games.
Jacubec established a career high with 21 points after shooting 8-of-12 from the floor, including four-of-six from beyond the arc. He totaled 15 points during the second half after making six-of-eight attempts from the field. Jacubec has scored in double-digits seven times this year and is averaging a career-best 9.6 points per game.
Murphy posted his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The 6-foot-8 forward has averaged 14.3 points and 8.0 rebounds over the last three games after battling foul trouble on Dec. 18.
Junior
Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) finished with 19 points and five rebounds in 22 minutes on Saturday. Senior
Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) added seven points and four rebounds, while freshman
Drew Cook (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) tallied a season-high five assists.
After Kutztown scored the game's opening two baskets, Cal U went on an 18-6 run behind nine points by Murphy to take an 18-10 lead with 5:47 left before the break. The teams traded points for the rest of the first half with the Vulcans taking a 26-18 lead into the locker rooms.
The Golden Bears started the second half on a 7-2 run before the Vulcans scored nine-unanswered points to stretch their lead to 36-25. Cal U expanded its lead to as many as 12 points, 39-27, when Murphy converted a traditional three-point play with 13:39 remaining. The Golden Bears trimmed the deficit to single digits with eight minutes left before the Vulcans sealed the win by making five-of-six from the charity stripe in the final 90 seconds.
Cal U finished the game shooting 40.0 percent (22-of-55) from the floor, including 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc. The Vulcans made a season-best 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the free-throw line. Kutztown posted a .436 field-goal percentage, but made just 1-of-10 from long range. The Golden Bears held a 36-30 rebounding advantage and scored 42 points from inside the paint.
Sophomore Tracy Peal led the Golden Bears with a game-high 29 points after shooting 12-of-18 from the floor. Freshman Austin Beidelman finished with 11 points, while classmate Josh Johnson and Peal led the team with eight rebounds.
The Vulcans finish PSAC Crossover play on Wednesday, Jan. 8, when they host Mansfield at 7:30 p.m.
