CALIFORNIA (Jan. 25) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team was defeated by Seton Hill 56-46 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.
The Vulcans sit in a tie for sixth place in the PSAC West standings at the halfway mark with a 3-5 conference record, 8-10 overall. The top six teams from each division earn a berth to the PSAC Tournament. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 12-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Junior
Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) led the Vulcans with 11 points, including nine from the free-throw line, while junior
Alonzo Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) and freshman
Drew Cook (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) each chipped in nine points.
Cal U opened the game with a 6-0 run after a pair of three-pointers, but Seton Hill battled back and claimed a 15-12 lead with 12:02 left in the first half. The Vulcans reclaimed the lead at 18-17 three minutes later, however a 15-3 run by the Griffins to close out the half gave them a 32-21 lead heading into the break.
Cal U narrowed the deficit over the first 10 minutes of the second half to four, 37-33, but the Griffins regained a seven-point lead on a basket-and-one play to take a 42-35 lead with 9:12 left in regulation. The Vulcans chipped away at the Seton Hill lead over the next two minutes and pulled within two, 43-41, on a pair of free-throws by senior
Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) with 7:04 left in the game. Junior
Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) scored on a lay-in with 4:08 remaining to cut the Griffin lead to 48-45, but Seton Hill extended its lead to seven, 52-45, with 2:49 left in the contest and held the Vulcans without a field goal over the final four minutes of the game.
Both teams struggled from the field with Cal U shooting 28 percent (12-of-42) compared to the 50 percent made by Seton Hill (21-of-42). The Griffins held the advantage on the boards (34-to-24), but also committed 19 turnovers, compared to the 13 giveaways committed by Cal U. Seton Hill dominated in the paint, out-scoring Cal U 30-8 from in close and held a 16-0 advantage in fastbreak points.
The Vulcans will stay remain at the Convocation Center for their next game when they host Gannon on Wednesday, Jan. 29, for a tip at 7:30 p.m.
