CALIFORNIA (Jan. 25) – Four players scored in double-figures, as the Vulcans held off Seton Hill 78-70 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The win improves the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The Vulcans sit at third place in the PSAC West standings at the halfway mark of the divisional slate and will play each PSAC West team again this season. Meanwhile, the loss drops Seton Hill to 3-5 in league play and 11-7 overall this season.

Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) led Cal U with 19 points, including three-for-four from long range, while senior
Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) registered her seventh career double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Junior
Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while freshman
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) chipped in 12 points and three assists in the win.
Cal U got off to a sluggish start in the first six minutes of the game, falling behind 11-1. The Vulcans missed their first six attempts from the field and committed seven turnovers to open the game. The Vulcans surged ahead with 16-unanswered points to take a 17-11 lead with 8:49 left in the first half. Cal U made all four of its three-point attempts and forced seven Seton Hill turnovers during the run. The Griffins ended the run with a basket, but Cal U closed the half by out-scoring Seton Hill 22-11 to take a 39-24 lead into halftime. The Vulcans swarming defense forced the Griffins into 19 turnovers in the first half which resulted in 21 Cal U points.
Seton Hill came out of the break on a roll, going on a 15-5 run to pull within five at 44-39 with 13:25 remaining in the game. Both teams traded baskets over the next several minutes before the Griffins hit a three-pointer to pull within two at 56-54 with 5:32 remaining in the game. Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) answered with a three of her own 30 seconds later to put Cal U back on top by four.
A pair of free-throws with 2:50 left in the game by Seton Hill pulled the visitors within 66-64, but the Vulcans answered with a trey from Kukolj less than a minute later to extend the lead back to five, 69-64. Cal U connected on nine of its 10 free-throw attempts in the final two minutes to hold off the Griffins for the win.
The Vulcans shot 36 percent from the field (22-of-61) compared to the 57 percent posted by Seton Hill (27-of-47), but connected on 25 free-throw attempts and out-rebounded the Griffins 36-to-28.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 29, when it hosts nationally-ranked Gannon at 5:30 p.m.
