Vulcans surge past Clarion, 71-58

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 15) – Four players scored in double-figures, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team earned a 71-58 win over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.

The win improves the Vulcans to 7-9 overall and 2-4 against the PSAC West. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 2-11 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Sophomore Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) led all players with 14 points, including three-of-five from three-point range, and added five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Junior Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals, while classmates Josh Dombrosky (Shenandoah Heights, Pa./Shenandoah Valley) and Alonzo Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) each chipped in 10 points.

Cal U opened the game on a 7-0 run through the first two minutes and extended its lead 17-9 with 12:21 left in the first half. After each team traded baskets, the Vulcans went on an 11-2 run to open up a 30-18 lead with 5:14 remaining in the opening frame. Clarion responded with 10-unanswered points to pull within 30-28 with 1:38 left in the half before Marks ended a four-minute Vulcan drought with a three-pointer. A last-second jumper by Jacubec sent Cal U into the half up 35-29.

Similar to the start of the game, the Vulcans opened the second half with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 42-29 with 17:49 left in the contest. The Golden Eagles responded with a 13-3 run to cut the Cal U lead to 45-42 with 12:30 remaining in the game, but the Vulcans out-scored Clarion 19-9 over the next six minutes to regain a double-digit lead, 64-51, with 5:56 remaining in the game. During that span, Cal U forced five Clarion turnovers and shot six-of-nine from the field. The Golden Eagles were unable to cut into the lead over the game's final five minutes en route to the Cal U victory.

The Vulcans shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field and 35 percent (6-of-17) from three-point range, compared to the 40.7 percent shot by Clarion (22-of-54). The Golden Eagles converted only 23 percent (5-of-21) of their long-range attempts.

Cal U is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18, when it travels to PSAC West rival IUP. The opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
