Cal U tops Duquesne, 6-1

HARMAR, Pa. (April 12) – Facing its 10th NCAA Division I opponent of the season, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team earned a 6-1 victory against Duquesne on Friday afternoon at the Alpha Tennis Club.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 11-9 overall after winning five of their last six matches. Meanwhile, the Dukes close the regular season with a 7-10 record.

Cal U opened the match by earning the doubles point on Friday, winning all three matches. At the first position, the No. 13 tandem of sophomore Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) and junior Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) extended its winning streak to five matches by earning an 8-5 victory over Megan O'Sullivan and Sarah Shashura. The No. 21 duo of freshman Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund) and sophomore Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) collected an 8-3 win at second doubles against Judy Li and Alexa Miller, while freshman Maxime Colen (Breda, Netherlands/Newman) and senior Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) downed Chandler Consonery and Laurence Lambert by an 8-2 count at the third slot.

The Vulcans completed the match victory by winning five of the six singles matches. Sipkova registered her 20th victory of the season at the first slot when Li retired in the second set. Czakon earned her sixth-consecutive win by outlasting O'Sullivan at second singles by a 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 count. Borgenhoff collected a 7-5, 6-3 win at the third position against Shashura, while Rey finished with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alrissa Tobe at fourth singles. Pondicas rallied to a 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 win against Miller at the fifth slot, while Colen suffered a 6-3, 7-5 loss at the sixth position versus Consonery.

Cal U closes the regular season on Sunday, April 14, when it hosts West Virginia State on Senior Day at Roadman Park, starting at 1 p.m.
