CLARION, Pa. (March 30) – The No. 16 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team registered a 9-0 win for the second time in three days, collecting a victory at Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday morning.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 8-8 this season with a 3-0 mark in divisional play. All eight of the losses for Cal U this season have come against either NCAA Division I members or nationally-ranked programs. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 3-4 overall and have lost three-straight matches after winning their spring opener.
Cal U lost just one point in doubles play and won all three matches for the fourth time this spring. At the first position, junior
Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and sophomore
Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) posted their team-leading 20th victory of the season by cruising to an 8-0 win against Megan Bettwy and Caitlin Clemons. Sophomore
Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman
Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund) posted an 8-0 victory over Madeline Robinson and Lauren Zezenski at second doubles, while freshmen
Maxime Colen (Breda, Netherlands/Newman) and
Elizabeth Guy (Quebec City, Quebec/Cardinal-Roy) tallied an 8-1 win at the third slot against Michaela Hardy and Jessica Kennelly.
The Vulcans dominated in singles action on Saturday, winning all six matches in straight sets with scores of 6-0, 6-0. Sipkova downed Zezenski at first singles and Czakon cruised past Robinson at the second position. Borgenhoff collected her team-best 22nd singles victory while blanking Bettwy at the fourth slot, while Rey earned the win against Hardy at fourth singles. Senior
Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) recorded the victory against Kennelly at the fifth position and Guy posted her first collegiate singles win versus Claire Kerstetter.
Cal U continues PSAC West play on Monday, April 1, when it hosts Mercyhurst at Roadman Park, starting at 12 p.m.
