No. 16 Vulcans cruise past Edinboro, 9-0

ERIE, Pa. (March 28) – Following a week-long layoff, the No. 16 Vulcans cruised to a 9-0 victory over Edinboro at Westwood Racquet Club on Thursday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 7-8 this season with a 2-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Edinboro falls to 13-4 overall and 0-1 in divisional action after entering play on an eight-match win streak, which equaled its win total from last year.

The Vulcans swept doubles play for the first time since Feb. 22, losing only two games on Thursday. At the first position, the No. 13 doubles team of junior Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and sophomore Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) posted an 8-2 victory over RyAnne' Baldwin and Kendal Stephens. Sophomore Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund), the No. 21 doubles team, blanked Oranza Carrillo and Nevena Kulina at the second slot, 8-0. Freshmen Maxime Colen (Breda, Netherlands/Newman) and Elizabeth Guy (Quebec City, Quebec/Cardinal-Roy) won by default at third doubles in Erie, Pa.

Cal U continued its strong play in singles action, dropping only four games in five matches since Edinboro only featured five players in the match. Sipkova cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over regionally-ranked Carrillo at the first position, while Czakon also collected a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Baldwin at second singles. Borgenhoff posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the third slot against Stephens and Rey finished with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kulina at the fourth position. Colen registered a 6-0, 6-0 win at fifth singles against Lydia Browne and Guy won by default at the sixth slot.

The Vulcans return to the courts on Saturday, March 30, when they continue PSAC West play at Clarion, starting at 10 a.m.
