EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 6) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team was limited to only four field goals and 17 points in the second half on Wednesday evening, falling 60-41 at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 14-6 overall and 10-6 in league play. Cal U has now suffered eight-consecutive losses against Edinboro, including four-straight at McComb Fieldhouse. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 16-4 this season behind a 13-3 mark in conference action.
Sophomore
Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) led the team in scoring for the first time in her career, finishing with 12 points after posting 10 points in the first half. She made four-of-six from the field and four-of-seven from the free-throw line on Wednesday. Kukolj added five rebounds and two assists in the losing effort.
Classmate
Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) registered the first double-double of her career, tallying 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds (seven offensive), while juniors
Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) and
Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) finished with eight and seven rebounds, respectively.
Senior guard
Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) was limited to seven points after scoring a combined 58 points over the previous three games.
Trailing midway through the first half, Cal U converted three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to take a 15-14 lead with 9:57 remaining. The Fighting Scots answered with four-straight points before the Vulcans mounted a 9-4 rally over the last six minutes of the half to take a 24-22 lead at the break.
The Fighting Scots reclaimed the lead with a 9-2 run in the opening four minutes of the second half to take a 33-26 lead. After four-straight points by Cal U, Edinboro sealed the victory with a 27-6 rally to take a 60-36 lead with 1:15 left to play. The Vulcans were limited to only a pair of field goals over the last 12 minutes of the game, as their last field goal was at the 6:10-mark.
Cal U finished the game shooting just 19.0 percent (12-of-63) from the floor, its lowest mark in over a decade. In comparison, Edinboro made 46.2 percent (24-of-52) from the field and 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the free-throw line. The Vulcans held a 45-38 rebounding advantage, while the Fighting Scots scored 38 points from inside the paint.
Senior Kiara Brown was one of three Fighting Scots in double-figures, scoring a game-high 24 points. Classmate Samantha Blazetic and freshman Aignee Freeland added 16 and 10 points, respectively, and both collected nine rebounds.
The Vulcans return to the Convocation Center on Saturday, Feb. 9, when they host No. 6 and division-leading Gannon on Alumni Day at 3 p.m.
