EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 6) – Senior
Quentin Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) scored a season-high 21 points, including the game-tying and game-winning free-throws with 4.8 seconds left, as the Vulcans posted a 73-72 victory at Edinboro on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 9-11 this season behind an 8-8 mark in league action. The Vulcans have swept the regular-season series against the Fighting Scots for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign. Meanwhile, Edinboro falls to 13-7 overall with a 9-7 record in conference play.
Harding posted the third 20-point game of his career, and first since Feb. 5, 2011, finishing with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor and four-of-five from the free-throw line. He has scored in double-digits three times in the last four games, posting a combined 55 points during that span.
Sophomore guard
Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) and junior forward
Anthony Lytle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) added 16 and 12 points, respectively, off the bench. Lytle, who played at Edinboro from 2009-11, also added six rebounds.
Senior
Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial), the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Week, tied his season low with seven points after scoring 47 points in two games last week. He also added a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.
Early in the first half, the Vulcans posted a 13-5 run over nearly three minutes to take a 17-14 lead with 13:29 left before the break. Edinboro managed to tie the game at 24-24 before Cal U closed the final seven minutes of the first half on a 15-6 rally to take a 39-30 lead at halftime.
Cal U made consecutive baskets early in the second half before Edinboro trimmed the deficit to 51-49 with a 17-8 run over nearly seven minutes. The Vulcans posted an 8-2 run to stretch their lead to 59-51 before a pair of free-throws by the Fighting Scots. Cal U then answered with an 8-4 rally to extend the lead to 67-57 with 4:29 left to play. The Fighting Scots countered with a 15-4 run over four-plus minutes to take a 72-71 lead following a tip-in with 18 seconds remaining. Harding then converted a pair of free-throws with 4.8 second left before Edinboro missed a lay-up as the buzzer sounded.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the floor after making 57 percent in the first half. Cal U also converted 75.0 percent (15-of-20) from the free-throw line. In comparison, Edinboro made 35.1 percent (27-of-77) from the field and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the charity stripe. The Vulcans were out-rebounded by a 46-35 margin after the Fighting Scots collected 24 offensive rebounds.
Junior Bryan Theriot led Edinboro in scoring with 20 points in just 19 minutes off the bench. Senior guard Jay Fletcher added 14 points and seven assists in the losing effort.
