PERRYSBURG, Ohio (Feb. 24) – Sophomore
Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) collected a straight-set win in singles play on Sunday morning, as the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team dropped a 6-1 match at Bowling Green.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-3 this season with all three losses coming against members of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Meanwhile, the Falcons improve to 9-1 overall after advancing to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament last season.
Bowling Green won two of the three doubles matches on Sunday to claim the doubles point. Senior
Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) and sophomore
Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) opened the session with an 8-6 loss at the third position to Katie Brozovich and Drew Fillis. Sophomore
Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman
Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund) then registered an 8-6 victory against Nikki Chiricosta and Jade Johnson at second doubles. The Falcons secured the doubles point after Rey and junior
Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) were outlasted at the first slot by Maddy Eccleston and Emily Reuland, 9-8 (9-7).
The Falcons earned the first victory in singles play after Pondicas retired against Brozovich at the sixth position. Senior Katie Grubb then collected a 6-4, 6-2 win at fifth singles versus Burrell. Bowling Green secured the match win after Reuland, an All-MAC Second-Team selection last year, registered a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Czakon at the second slot.
Rey downed Mary Hill at fourth singles by a 6-1, 6-4 count before Chiricosta, a 2012 All-MAC First-Team selection, posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Sipkova at the first position. Eccleston finished the match with a 6-3, 7-6 win at the third slot over Borgenhoff.
The Vulcans return to action on Sunday, March 3, when they face Pittsburgh at the Alpha Tennis Club in Harmar, Pa., starting at 12 p.m.
