CALIFORNIA (Feb. 20) – The Vulcans were limited to 53 points for the third time in the last four games and made just one three-pointer in an 85-53 loss to Slippery Rock at the Convocation Center on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team falls to 10-14 this season behind a 9-11 record in league play. The Vulcans will now open the PSAC Tournament on the road with their seed and opponent still to be determined. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock improves to 18-6 this season with a 15-5 mark in conference play.
Senior forward
Mitchell Weedon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) led the team with 12 points off the bench after scoring only 19 combined points in the last month. He made four-of-six attempts from the floor while playing 16 minutes on Wednesday.
Sophomore
Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) and senior
Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) both added 10 points in the loss. Sophomore
Jeremy Posey (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) finished with seven points and two blocks in limited minutes off the bench.
The Rock started the game on a 9-2 run before the Vulcan made their first field goal with 14:50 left in the first half. Slippery Rock stretched its lead to 22-9 with 7:58 remaining after Cal U made just one of its first 14 field-goal attempts. After the teams traded baskets, The Rock mounted a 9-2 run over two-plus minutes to stretch the lead to 35-15 before they scored the last seven points of the first half to take a 45-21 lead at the break.
Midway through the second half, Slippery Rock posted a 15-4 run over a five-minute span to stretch the lead to 73-37 with 8:50 remaining. The Rock later led by as many as 39 points before the Vulcans scored the last seven points of the game with Posey scoring five points in the last 2:44, 85-53.
The Vulcans posted their lowest shooting performance in nearly a month, making 32.0 percent (16-of-5) from the field and just 7.1 percent (1-of-14) from beyond the arc. The Rock shot at a 47.8 clip (33-of-69) from the floor and 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from long range. Slippery Rock out-rebounded Cal U by a dominant 51-25 margin and scored 23 points inside the paint.
Senior forward Devin Taylor recorded his 10th double-double of the year, posting 14 points and 14 rebounds. Classmates Darious Clark and Gerald Brooks both led the team with 17 points in the victory.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 23, when it hosts Mercyhurst at the Convocation Center for Senior Day, starting at 3 p.m.
