SOUTH PARK, Pa. (Feb. 16) – The No. 8 Vulcans earned their first dual win of the year on Saturday evening, posting a 6-3 victory over NCAA Division III perennial power Carnegie Mellon at Glen Creek Tennis Club.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 1-2 this season. Meanwhile, No. 5 Carnegie Mellon falls to 2-1 overall after posting a victory over Slippery Rock last week.
The Vulcans opened the match by winning two of three matches in doubles play. At the first position, sophomore
Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) and junior
Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) earned an 8-1 victory over Tartans' Katie Cecil and Angela Pratt. Sophomore
Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman
Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund) collected an 8-5 win at second doubles against Chelsea Motie and Bryn Rashke. At the third slot, freshmen
Maxime Colen (Breda, Netherlands/Newman) and
Elizabeth Guy (Quebec City, Quebec/Cardinal-Roy) suffered an 8-5 loss to Abbey Hamstra and Brooke Tsu.
Cal U secured the match victory by winning the top half of the singles lineup in straight sets. Sipkova posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory against regionally-ranked Cecil at the first position, while Czakon recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win over Motie at the second slot. Borgenhoff tallied a 6-2, 6-1 victory at third singles versus regionally-ranked Elizabeth Martin and Rey earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Tsu at the fourth position. Sophomore
Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia Presbyterian Ladies' College) dropped a 6-2, 6-2 contest to Pratt at the fifth slot, while Colen fell 6-0, 6-3 against Hamstra at sixth singles.
The Vulcans continue their weekend homestand tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 17, when it hosts Denison (Ohio) at the Glen Creek Tennis Club, starting at 1 p.m.
