Cal U clips Cheyney in final minute, 50-49

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 18) – Behind a last-second defensive stand, the Vulcans rallied for a 50-49 win over Cheyney Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at the Convocation Center.
 
The win gives the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team three wins in a row and improves to 4-6 overall. Meanwhile, the Wolves fall to 2-8 overall this season.
 
Sophomore Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) led the Vulcans with 10 points on four-of-seven shooting from the field and added six rebounds in the win. Junior Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) added nine points and six boards, while juniors Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono West (Pa.)) and Alonzo Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian) each chipped in eight points.
 
The teams traded baskets through the opening 12 minutes of the game and were tied 17-17 with 7:43 left in the first half. Fortune and sophomore Josh Dombrosky (Shenandoah Heights, Pa./Shenandoah Valley) connected on a pair of buckets to put Cal U up 22-18 with 5:11 remaining in the half, but Cheyney closed out the frame with 10-unanswered points to take a 28-22 lead into the break.
 
Cheyney scored the second half's first points before the Vulcans followed with a 13-5 run to even the game at 35-35 with 12:50 remaining in the game. Cheyney regained the lead for most of the next 10 minutes, but the Vulcans never trailed by more than three points at any time and claimed a 47-46 lead with 1:21 left in the game when freshman Drew Cook (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) stole an in-bound pass and scored a fastbreak lay-in.
 
The Wolves regained the lead on a baseline lay-in, but Murphy powered his way to the basket on the other end of the court to give the Vulcans a 50-49 lead with 35 seconds left in the game.
 
Cheyney worked the clock on the ensuing possession, but missed a potential go-ahead jumper from the elbow. However, Cheyney regained possession off a deflected rebound out of bounds with 0.2 seconds remaining. Cal U tipped the ensuing inbounds pass off the backboard to seal the victory.
 
Senior Deshawn Curtis registered a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wolves
 
The Vulcans hit the road to close out the 2013 portion of their schedule Saturday, Dec. 21, when they head to Millersville for a PSAC Crossover match-up. Opening tip for the game is set for 3 p.m.
