CALIFORNIA (Nov. 9) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team fell to Millersville, 91-76, in its season-opening game Saturday night at the Convocation Center.
The Vulcans begin the season 0-1 for the first time in over a decade, while the Marauders improve to 1-0 and snap a two-game losing streak against Cal U.
Four Vulcans scored in double-digits, including senior forward
Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) who registered a double-double off the bench with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport), making her Cal U debut, scored a team-best 15 points of the bench and added three steals, while senior
Ryah Gadson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and junior
Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Neither team established a lead greater than five points until a Millersville lay-up concluded an 11-4 run and made the score 26-19 with 7:24 left in the first half. Gadson helped the Vulcans close the gap with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to make the score 41-37 at halftime.
Millersville opened the second half on a 10-2 run take a 51-39 lead, but Cal U responded with an 18-4 run to take a 57-55 lead with 10:56 left in the game. Unfortunately for the Vulcans, it would be the time they held the lead, as the Marauders out-scored Cal U 36-19 in the final 10 minutes of the game, including nine free-throws in the final minute to prevent a comeback attempt.
Cal U shot 33 percent (27-of-80) from the field, including 22 percent (5-of-22) from three-point territory. The Vulcans were charged with 31 of the 55 fouls in the game. Millersville converted 70 percent (29-of-41) of its free-throw attempts, while Cal U managed to shoot 63 percent (17-of-27) from the charity stripe. Millersville out-rebounded the Vulcans 54-39, but Cal U held a 19-14 advantage in offensive boards.
The Vulcans received a significant contribution from their bench, as 43 of their 76 points came from non-starters.
Cal U is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 12, when it heads to Fairmont State for a non-conference showdown. The game is scheduled to tip at 6 p.m.
