Cal U shuts down Slippery Rock, 3-0

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 8) – The Vulcans shutout Slippery Rock, 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-18), Friday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Convocation Center.
 
The win improves the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team to 18-1 in league play and 22-5 overall. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 10-22 overall and 5-14 in the PSAC.
 
Senior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and sophomore Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) each had 12 kills to lead the Cal U attack. Delaney had 12 kills on 31 attacks on a .323 hitting percentage, while Lavery converted 12-of-24 attacks for a .417 mark. Junior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) rounded out the Vulcans with nine kills on 24 swings and a .375 hitting percentage. Cal U posted a .340 hitting percentage for the match, its third-highest single-match mark of the season.
 
Senior Abbey Freund (Cottege Grove, Wis./Monona Grove), making her season debut at home due to injuries, and freshman Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) each had 17 assists in the win.
 
Three Vulcans had double-digit digs led by sophomore Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), who posted 11, while Miller and Scurpa each had 10.
 
Cal U trailed 11-7 in the first set before it rallied off 18 of the next 21 points to take the first set 25-14. The Vulcans never trailed by more than two points in the second or third sets.
 
The Vulcans conclude their 2013 regular-season home schedule tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 9, when they host Edinboro for a match at 2 p.m. Prior to the match, Freund and Delaney will be honored as part of Senior Day.
