Volleyball advances to PSAC Semifinals, 3-0

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 19) – Senior Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and junior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) both recorded double-doubles on Tuesday night, as the second-seeded Vulcans earned a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-20, 25-16) over third-seeded Seton Hill in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 27-7 overall and advances to the semifinals of the league tournament. The Vulcans will now travel to face Shippensburg, the top seed from the PSAC East, on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Seton Hill falls to 26-11 in its first season as a member of the league.

Miller posted her 14th kill/dig double-double of the season, finishing with 16 kills on a .342 hitting percentage, while also totaling 10 digs, two service aces and two blocks. Freund finished with 17 assists and 13 digs in the sweep over the Griffins.

Sophomore Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) collected 10 kills while hitting at a season-best .769 clip and also recorded seven blocks. Senior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) added seven kills, nine digs and four blocks, while sophomore Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) led the team with 18 digs. Freshman Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) nearly posted a double-double with 17 assists and eight digs on Tuesday.

The Vulcans earned a 25-14 victory in the first set after the Griffins recorded a minus-.080 hitting percentage. After dropping the first point of the night, Cal U won five of the next six points and later scored three-straight points to take an 8-3 lead. The teams traded the next 10 points before Seton Hill earned back-to-back points for the first time in the set. The Vulcans responded by closing out the set on an 11-4 run, highlighted by winning the last five points.

Cal U claimed a 25-20 win in the second set while posting 17 kills, including a combined 11 by Fouzie and Miller, on a .333 hitting percentage. The two teams traded runs early in the second set with the Griffins scoring three-straight points to tie the score at 12-12. The Vulcans then mounted a 9-2 run behind three blocks by Fouzie to take a 21-14 lead before trading points to earn the set victory.

The Vulcans secured the match victory with a 25-16 win in the third set with Miller recording seven of the team's 15 kills. Seton Hill won the first three points of the set and held a 6-4 lead before Cal U rallied off five-straight points to take a 9-6 lead. After back-to-back points by the Griffins, the Vulcans earned another five-unanswered points to stretch the lead to 14-8. The two teams traded points until Cal U won the last five points of the match to record its 14th sweep of the season.

Cal U will face Shippensburg in the PSAC Tournament on Friday for the first time since the 2009 season. The Vulcans earned a 3-1 victory at home over the Raiders during the regular season after the teams split a pair of matches last season with Cal U posting a 3-1 win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
