ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 16) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team was defeated by Gannon 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 16-14) at the Hammermill Center in the regular season and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) finale for both teams Saturday night.
The loss drops the Vulcans to 19-3 in conference play, 26-7 overall, and locks the team into second place in the PSAC West standings heading into the league tournament. Cal U will host Seton Hill Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament. Meanwhile, the win secures the No. 4 seed in the PSAC West for the Golden Knights and improves them to 19-12 overall, 14-8 in league action.
Junior
Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the Vulcans with 23 kills, while senior
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) recorded her 14th kill/dig double-double of the season with 10 kills and 18 digs.
Freshman
Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) guided the Cal U offense with 36 assists and added 16 digs, while sophomore
Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) aided the Vulcan defense with 31 digs, her second highest single-match total of her career.
The loss marks the first time the Vulcans have lost consecutive matches since the team lost a pair of matches to Washburn (Kan.) and Ashland at the Ferris State Invitational on Sept. 7. Cal U then rolled off 12-straight wins after those losses.
The Vulcans will begin their quest for a PSAC Championship Tuesday, Nov. 19, when they host Seton Hill in the opening round of the conference tournament. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. Cal U won both meetings against the Griffins this season, including a 3-1 win at home on Nov. 5.
