Cal U tripped up at Mercyhurst, 3-2

ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 15) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team was edged by Mercyhurst 3-2 (20-25, 29-27, 25-20, 20-25, 15-13) Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

The loss drops the Vulcans to 19-2 in conference play, but keeps them in a tie for first place in the PSAC West with Clarion's 3-1 loss at Edinboro, and 26-6 overall. Meanwhile, the Lakers improve to 17-14 overall and 11-10 in league play.

Junior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led Cal U with 13 kills and 17 digs in the loss. Sophomore Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) paced Miller with 12 kills, while senior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) finished with a kill/dig double-double behind 11 kills and 15 digs.

Freshman Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) helped guide the offense with a team-high 27 assists and 18 digs, while sophomore Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) led the Vulcan defense with 19 digs.

The Vulcans led 20-16 in the second set before the Lakers rallied off six-straight points to take a 22-20 lead. Cal U claimed the next four points to receive a serve for set point, but Mercyhurst fought to even the score. After each team exchanged points, the Lakers tallied back-to-back points to earn what would prove to be a crucial 29-27 win.

Freshman Sarah Wegrzyn led Mercyhurst with 20 of the team's 60 kills in the victory.

Cal U will conclude the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 16, at Gannon. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
