Vulcans clipped at Fairmont State, 67-61

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (Nov. 12) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team lost to Fairmont State 67-61 in non-conference action Tuesday night at the Joe Retton Arena.

The Vulcans fall to 0-2 this season, while the Fighting Falcons improve to 2-0 overall.

Junior Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) set a career high with 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including a perfect six-of-six from the charity stripe. Senior Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) and freshman Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) each had 10 points to pace Mahady. Antonenko and senior Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) each led the Vulcans on the glass with eight rebounds.

Fairmont State took a six-point lead, 62-56, with 2:25 remaining in the game after neither team could take control of a half that included several lead changes and six ties. Cal U cut the lead in half with three free-throws from Glenn to make the score 62-59 with 1:24 left in the game. The Vulcans forced a Fighting Falcon turnover on the next possession and Hines converted a shot in the lane to bring Cal U within one point with 47 seconds left in regulation.

On the following possession, Fairmont State ran the shot clock below three seconds and attempted a frantic shot from just inside the three-point arc that was rebounded by Glenn. Mahady attempted a three-pointer for the lead with six seconds left, but it rimmed out and was rebounded by the Fighting Falcons.

Fairmont State sunk a pair of free-throws to extend its lead to three, 64-61, with four seconds left giving the Vulcans a chance for a tie. After a timeout, Glenn attempted to inbound the ball, but stepped on the baseline, turning the ball over. The Falcons converted a basket-and-one to close the game.  

After making 31 percent of its attempts from the field in the first half (9-of-29), Fairmont State went on to shoot 50 percent in the second frame (12-of-24) and 13-of-16 from the free-throw line (81 percent).

Cal U is back in action Sunday, Nov. 17, when it travels to Detroit, Mich., to take on Wayne State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
