CALIFORNIA (Oct. 26) – The Vulcans came back from a 2-1 deficit to upend Mercyhurst, 3-2 (25-21, 28-30, 20-25, 25-22, 15-5) Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Convocation Center.
The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 15-0 in conference play and 22-4 overall. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 14-11 overall and 8-7 in the PSAC.
The Vulcans trailed 2-1 after Mercyhurst rolled off a pair of wins and held a 7-6 lead in the fourth set. Cal U won 13 of the next 19 points to take a 19-13 lead and finished off the Lakers at 25-22.
In the fifth set the Vulcans opened up a 11-5 lead and closed out the match on a service ace from freshman
Cheyenne Rose (Lancaster, Ohio/Harvest Prep).
Senior
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) led the offense and defense for Cal U with game-highs of 16 kills and 21 digs. Sophomore
Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) matched Delaney's kill effort with 16 and added six digs and two blocks, while junior
Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa/Bethel Park) added 11 kills in the win.
Along with Delaney's 21 digs, three other Vulcans reached double-digit digs. Both junior
Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) and sophomore
Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) had 18 digs, while freshman
Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) finished with 17 digs to go along with her game-high 51 assists.
Cal U combined for 16 blocks in the win, including a team-high five from freshman
Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Hayes also matched a season-high with six kills in the victory.
The Vulcans are a perfect 4-0 in fifth set matches this season. The team had not won back-to-back matches in five sets since 2009 when they beat Kutztown and Shepherd 3-2 in consectutive contests.
The Vulcans are back on the court Friday, Nov. 4, when they travel to take on IUP. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
