Vulcans collect wins in crossover play

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 18) – In their first action in nearly a week, the Vulcans returned to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action on Friday with a pair of wins over host Kutztown and West Chester.

With the victories, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team extends its win streak to seven matches and improves to 18-4 overall. The Vulcans also remain unbeaten in league play this season with an 11-0 mark.

The Vulcans opened Friday morning with a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) over the host Golden Bears. Junior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the team with 15 kills, while sophomore Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) finished with 12 kills on a season-high .500 hitting percentage. Senior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and sophomore Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) added eight and seven kills, respectively, in the sweep.

Delaney paced the defensive effort with 12 digs, while senior Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and sophomore Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) each tallied 10 digs. In her first extensive action of the season, Freund directed the offense with 40 assists to record the 22nd assist/dig double-double of her career.

Cal U closed play on Friday evening with a 3-1 win (25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 25-11) against West Chester. Delay recorded a team-high 16 kills while hitting at a .366 clip and Lavery added 10 kills and four blocks. Miller and Fouzie posted seven and six kills, respectively. Freund engineered the Vulcans with 37 assists and collected four kills against the Golden Rams.

Rudy led the team with 14 digs, while the trio of Delaney, Freund and Lavery each collected seven digs.

The Vulcans continue PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 19, when they travel to East Stroudsburg, Pa., to play Cheyney and the host Warriors, starting at 10 a.m.
