Cal U snaps skid versus Lock Haven, 81-67

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 26) – Four players scored in double-digits on Saturday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with an 81-67 victory over Lock Haven at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 7-10 overall behind a 6-7 mark in league play. Cal U posted its largest margin of victory since earning a 29-point win in the season-opener against Penn State-Fayette (84-55). Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles drop to 5-11 this season with a 3-10 record in conference play.

Senior Quentin Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) scored a team-high 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and four-of-four from the free-throw line. He also posted four rebounds and a season-high five assists against Lock Haven.

Freshman guard Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) finished with a career-high 13 points after making five-of-eight from the field, including three-of-four from beyond the arc. He also collected five rebounds, three rebounds and three steals while playing a career-high 30 minutes.

Sophomore Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) and junior Anthony Lytle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) both finished with 10 points off the bench on Saturday. Senior guard Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) was limited to eight points and totaled five assists and two steals.

With the game tied 13-13, the Vulcans posted a 10-2 run over four minutes to take a 23-15 lead with 9:21 remaining. On the next Cal U possession, Jacubec made his third trey of the first half before Lock Haven trimmed the deficit to 26-25 with 6:53 left in the first half. Cal U answered with a 6-1 run to increase the lead to 32-26 with 5:12 remaining before taking a 34-30 lead at the break.

Lock Haven evened the score at 34-34 before junior Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) scored seven-straight points to give Cal U a 41-34 lead with 16:10 left to play. The Bald Eagles trimmed the deficit to 43-41 before the Vulcans mounted a 15-3 run over four-plus minutes to take a 68-50 lead with 6:29 remaining. During the rally, Lytle and Fortune combined to score 13 of their 20 second-half points. Lock Haven trimmed the deficit to 74-61 with 1:55 left to play, but Cal U maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.

The Vulcans posted one of their top shooting performances of the year, making 56.6 percent (30-of-53) from the floor and 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the free-throw line. In comparison, the Bald Eagles shot 57.4 percent (27-of-47) from the field and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe. The Vulcans committed a season-low eight turnovers and scored 38 points from in the paint.

Junior Kasheef Festus finished with a game-high 18 points in the loss, while sophomore Wali Hepburn posted a season-low 11 points, six rebounds and six assists. Hepburn entered play ranked first in the PSAC and eighth in NCAA Division II in scoring with 23.7 points per game.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when it hosts Clarion at the Convocation Center at 7:30 p.m.
