Vulcans fall at Slippery Rock, 75-58

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Jan. 23) – The Vulcans suffered their third-straight loss on Wednesday night, falling 75-58 at division-leading Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team falls to 6-10 overall with a 5-7 record in league action. The Vulcans have now lost three-straight games and five of their last six, including the last two by a combined 40 points. Meanwhile, The Rock improves to 13-3 this season behind a 10-2 record in conference play.

Sophomore guard Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) led the team with 15 points on five-of-eight from the field and four-of-five from the free-throw line. He also collected five rebounds and three steals in the loss.

Senior Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) finished with 11 points after making seven-of-seven from the charity stripe. He also tallied six rebounds, five assists and four steals on Wednesday. Sophomore forward Jeremy Posey (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) finished with six points and four rebounds while making his second-straight start.

Trailing by two points midway through the first half, Cal U scored six-straight points to take an 18-14 lead on a lay-up by Fortune with 9:42 remaining. After a three-pointer by the Vulcans, The Rock posted 13-unanswered points to take a 32-21 lead. Cal U then cut the deficit to 32-25 with baskets on two-straight possessions before Slippery Rock closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 41-27 lead into the break.

The Rock opened the second half on an 8-2 run to stretch their lead to 49-29 with 16:52 remaining. Cal U then mounted a 9-2 run over two-plus minutes to cut the deficit to 51-36 with 14:25 left to play. After the teams traded baskets, Slippery Rock extended the lead to 30 points, 68-38, with 6:52 remaining. The Vulcans then mounted a 20-6 run to trim the deficit to 74-58 with 2:40 left to play.

Cal U finished the game shooting 30.0 percent (18-of-60) from the floor and 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the free-throw line. In comparison, Slippery Rock made 50.0 percent (31-of-62) from the field and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the charity stripe. The Rock out-rebounded the Vulcans by a 42-33 margin and scored 42 points from inside the paint.

Senior forward Gerald Brooks led the Rock with 17 points off the bench and was one of four players to score in double-digits. Classmate Devin Taylor finished with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26, when they host Lock Haven at 3 p.m.
