CALIFORNIA (Jan. 12) – Senior forward
Mitchell Weedon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) registered a double-double and scored six points in the closing minutes on Saturday night, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team posted a 79-76 victory against Shippensburg at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
With the win, the Vulcans snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 6-7 overall with a 5-4 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Raiders suffered their 10th-straight loss to 2-11 this season behind a 0-9 record in conference action.
Senior guard
Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) scored a game-high 25 points on 7-of-12 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. He also collected six rebounds and two steals on Saturday. Lowe has now scored at least 20 points in seven of his last nine games.
Weedon posted his second double-double this season, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds (five offensive). He made 8-of-11 attempts from the field and totaled three steals and two blocks in the victory. Weedon is averaging 12.5 points and 7.3 rebounds over the last three games.
Senior
Quentin Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) added 11 points and three assists, while junior
Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) finished with seven points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench. Junior
Tyrone Steals (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) also tied his season high with seven points while playing 10 points as a reserve.
Early in the first half, Cal U mounted a 16-2 run with eight points by Lowe to take a 26-14 lead with 9:06 left before the break. The Vulcans later stretched the lead 34-20 before the Raiders scored seven-straight points to trim the deficit to 36-29 with 2:40 left in the first half. Steals then posted five points in 40-plus seconds to give Cal U a 12-point lead before the Vulcans took a 43-31 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Vulcans led 49-36 before the Raiders posted a 12-5 run to cut the deficit to 54-48 with 13:49 remaining. Cal U responded with five-straight points to take a 59-48 lead on a jumper by Williams before Shippensburg again mounted a rally to trim the lead to 61-55 with 8:07 left to play. Shippensburg later posted seven-unanswered points to cut the deficit to 69-67 before Weedon scored six points in 32 seconds to give Cal U a 77-69 lead with 37 seconds remaining. After the teams traded points, Shippensburg scored five-straight points to trail only 79-76 with 11 seconds left. The Vulcans missed the front end of a one-and-one and the Raiders collected the rebound, but were unable to attempt a possible game-tying shot before time expired.
Cal U finished the game shooting 49.1 percent (29-of-61) from the field and 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the free-throw line. Shippensburg shot similar percentages, making 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the floor and 68.0 percent (17-of-25) from the charity stripe. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Raiders by a 37-35 margin and both teams scored 34 points from inside the paint. Cal U committed just 14 turnovers in the victory, which ranks as its second-lowest total of the season.
Junior forward Dylan Edgar led four Raiders in double-digits with 21 points and sophomore guard Reggie Charles added 18 points in the losing effort.
The Vulcans return to PSAC West play on Wednesday, Jan. 16, when they host rival and No. 21 IUP in the Convocation Center, starting at 7:30 p.m.
