Cal U edged by Millersville, 62-60

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 11) – In their first home game in nearly a month, the Vulcans dropped a 62-60 contest to Millersville at the Convocation Center on Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team falls to 5-7 this season with a 4-4 mark in league action. The Vulcans have now suffered five losses this season by five points or less. Meanwhile, the Marauders improve to 10-4 overall behind a 6-2 record in conference play.

Senior Quentin Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) tied his season-high with 17 points after making four-of-nine from the field and eight-of-eight from the free-throw line. He has scored a combined 29 points over the last two games after being limited to a season-low two points last Friday at Kutztown.

Classmate Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) finished with 15 points on Friday and now ranks fifth in the league with 18.4 points per game. He shot 6-of-10 from the floor and three-of-eight from the free-three line while adding three steals. Junior forward Anthony Lytle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) registered 10 points and six rebounds, while sophomore forward Jeremy Posey (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) added seven points off the bench.

After Millersville made the opening basket of the second half, Cal U mounted an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to 34-33 after a pair of free-throws by Harding with 17:05 remaining. The Vulcans later tied the score for the first time at 37-37 before the Marauders posted a 13-4 rally to take a 50-41 lead with 11:05 left to play. Cal U later countered with a 13-5 run over four-plus minutes to tie the game at 59-59 after two free-throws by Harding with 2:13 remaining.

Both teams were held scoreless for a minute before the Marauders took the lead on a pair of free-throws with 1:13 left. Cal U then made a free-throw on its possession before Millersville stretched the lead to 62-60 on another free-throw with 23 seconds remaining. The Vulcans missed a potential lay-up with three seconds left and the Marauders collected the rebound to seal the victory.

Cal U finished the game shooting 45.7 percent (21-of-46) from the field and recorded just one three-pointer for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Meanwhile, Millersville made 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the floor and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from beyond the arc. The Marauders held a 34-26 rebounding advantage and never trailed in the contest.

Millersville senior Elijah Obade recorded his eighth double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while junior guards Brandon Belt and Anthony Coleman combined for 23 points in the victory.

Cal U finishes PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 12, when it hosts Shippensburg at the Convocation Center, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
