No. 8 Vulcans top West Virginia, 5-2

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 7) – The No. 8 Vulcans recorded a 5-2 win at West Virginia on Saturday afternoon to mark their fifth victory of the season against an NCAA Division I program, including three against BIG EAST members.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team extends its win streak to seven matches and improves to 17-5 overall. Meanwhile, West Virginia falls to 4-14 this season.

The Vulcans and Mountaineers each won a match in doubles play on Saturday with Cal U earning the doubles point after West Virginia forfeited the match at the third position. At first doubles, seniors Martina Rubesova (Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Dr. Vaclava Smejkala) and Franziska Steinhardt (Bad Lausick, Germany/St. Augustin Gymnasium) collected an 8-5 victory over Mary Chupa and Ikttesh Chahal. Senior Annabel Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelund) and junior Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) suffered an 8-6 loss at the second slot against WVU's Veronica Cardenas and Emily Mathis.

In singles, Cal U received a victory via forfeit at the sixth position, as West Virginia was unable to fill a complete lineup. Rubesova extended her winning streak to eight matches with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at first singles over Chupa. Pieschl posted a 6-4, 6-0 win at the second position against Mathis and Pieschl tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cardenas at the third slot.

At fourth singles, senior Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) suffered a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss against Chahal on Saturday. Steinhardt was outlasted at the fifth position by Catie Wickline in three sets, 6-1, 0-6, 7-5.

The Vulcans return to divisional play on Tuesday, April 10, when they host No. 44 Slippery Rock on Senior Day at 4 p.m.
