No. 8 Tennis overpowers No. 41 IUP, 9-0

INDIANA, Pa. (April 1) – In a match featuring the top-ranked teams in the Atlantic Region, the No. 8 Vulcans recorded a 9-0 shutout win at No. 41 IUP on Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 15-5 overall with a 3-0 mark in league action. Meanwhile, IUP falls to 11-6 this season with a 1-1 record in divisional play.

The Vulcans swept doubles play for the third time in their last four matches. At the first position, seniors Martina Rubesova (Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Dr. Vaclava Smejkala) and Franziska Steinhardt (Bad Lausick, Germany/St. Augustin Gymnasium) collected their 20th win of the season by claiming an 8-2 victory over Crimson Hawks' Tabtip Louhabanjong and Katie Eaton. Senior Annabel Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelund) and junior Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) posted an 8-5 win at second doubles over Tanya Timko and Emilia Osborne, the third-ranked doubles team in the region. At the third slot, senior Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) and freshman Jolien Borrenberghs (Hasselt, Belgium/KA2 Sportschool) collected an 8-4 victory against IUP's Erika Schnaas and Ranvita Mahto.

In singles, Rubesova posted her 20th singles victory of the year by dealing a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to regionally-ranked Louhabanjong at the first position. Pieschl also earned her 20th singles win of the year on Sunday with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the second slot over Timko. At third singles, Pondicas collected a 6-4, 6-0 win over Eaton, another regionally-ranked player for the Crimson Hawks.

At the fourth position, Zherdeva rallied to a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 victory against IUP's Abby McCormick. Steinhardt claimed a 6-0, 7-5 win at fifth singles over Osborne, while Borrenberghs outlasted Schnaas at the sixth slot by a 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 count.

Cal U returns to the courts on Tuesday, April 3, when it travels to face Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa., at 3:30 p.m.
