Vulcans end trip with win at No. 10 Rollins, 6-3

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 17) – Senior Martina Rubesova (Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Dr. Vaclava Smejkala) was one of three players to post multiple wins on Saturday morning, as the No. 11 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team closed its spring trip with a 6-3 victory against No. 10 Rollins (Fla.).

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 10-3 this season behind an impressive 5-2 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. During its week-long trip to the Sunshine State, Cal U finished with a 3-2 record while facing five Top 30 teams. Meanwhile, Rollins drops to 6-6 overall after facing its eighth-consecutive, nationally-ranked program.

Cal U won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Rubesova and fellow senior Franziska Steinhardt (Bad Lausick, Germany/St. Augustin Gymnasium), the No. 6 doubles team in the country, cruised to an 8-0 victory at first doubles over Tars' Lisa Loft and Kayli Ragsdale. At the second position, senior Annabel Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelund) and junior Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) collected an 8-3 win against Mariana Salvador and Ashley Rosenberg. For the season, Pieschl now leads the team with 20 victories in doubles play behind a 12-1 record in dual matches. Rollins posted its lone win in doubles play at the third slot when Stefania Tkach and Callie Whitlock outlasted senior Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) and freshman Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) by a 9-7 count.

The Vulcans then clinched the match against the Tars by winning four singles matches. After sitting out singles yesterday, No. 10 Rubesova returned to the lineup and posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory against No. 22 Loft at the first slot. Pieschl added a 6-2, 6-0 win at the second position over Tkach, while Pondicas suffered a three-set loss at third singles to Rosenberg, 6-3, 4-6, 10-2.

At the fourth position, Zherdeva fell to Salvador by a 6-1, 7-5 count on Saturday. Steinhardt collected a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Whitlock at fifth singles, while Czakon rallied to a 2-6, 7-6, 10-2 win at the sixth slot over Sara Stosljevic.

Cal U is scheduled to return to the courts tomorrow, Sunday, March 18, at Roadman Park with a match against Williams (Mass.), the No. 1 team in NCAA Division III. The Ephs have appeared in the NCAA Tournament every year since 1994 and have won a record six NCAA Championships (2001-02, 2008-11), including four consecutive.
