Vulcans claim win at Edinboro, 68-64

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 25) – Redshirt junior guard Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) registered his first career double-double on Saturday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 68-64 win against Edinboro at McComb Fieldhouse in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the victory, the Vulcans finish the regular season at 17-11 overall behind a 14-8 mark in divisional play. Cal U has earned the fourth seed in next week's PSAC Tournament and will travel to face No. 13 IUP, who has won each of the last two league titles, on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Meanwhile, Edinboro finishes the year at 13-13 overall and 11-11 in league action.

Vann established season highs with 17 points and 12 rebounds (three offensive) on Saturday. The junior guard shot 6-of-10 from the floor and was four-of-four from the free-throw line against the Fighting Scots. After missing last season due to injury, Vann is averaging career highs of 8.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals after starting 18 games.

Senior Steve Swiech (Greenock, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) finished with eight points and 10 rebounds (eight first half), while freshman Jeremy Posey (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) scored 10 points after shooting 5-of-10 field and collected six rebounds off the bench.

A dunk by Posey at the 11:14-mark brought the Vulcans within one point, 12-11, before the Fighting Scots made a three-pointer to extend the lead to five points, 32-27, with just under four minutes remaining in the first half. Junior Quentin Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) made a lay-up at the 4:02-mark to trim the deficit to 30-27 before Vann made a trey to bring Cal U within two points, 32-30, with just over two minutes remaining before the break. Edinboro ended the first half with two free-throws to take a 36-32 lead into halftime.

The Fighting Scots started the second half on a 5-2 run to extend their lead to 43-34 at the 18:12-mark. Freshman guard Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y. Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) converted a lay-up to cut the deficit to 43-42 with 15:31 remaining before a jumper by Vann at the 13:28-mark gave Cal U a 48-47 lead. Edinboro mounted an 8-0 run to take a three-point lead, 55-52, with just over nine minutes remaining. A lay-up by Vann at the 7:33-mark tied the game at 56-56 before a jumper by Posey put Cal U up four, 60-56, with 4:10 left in the half. Vann and Fortune combined to make six free-throws in the final minute to seal the win.

In the victory, Cal U shot 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the field and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Edinboro made 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the floor behind 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from beyond the arc. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Fighting Scots by a staggering 55-30 margin behind 21 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second-chance points.

Sophomore guard Alex Moore led four Fighting Scots in double-figures with 15 points after making five-of-five from the floor. Senior Cory Somerville added 10 points and led the team with eight rebounds and two blocks.

The Vulcans open play in the PSAC Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 28, when they travel to face rival IUP at the Kovalchick Convention ant Athletic Complex, starting at 7 p.m. Cal U and IUP split the regular-season series this year with the home team winning each time. Last season, the Vulcans suffered a 73-68 loss on the road to the Crimson Hawks in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament.
