CALIFORNIA (Feb. 11) – Seniors
Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill. / James Hubert Blake (Md.)) each scored 24 points on Saturday afternoon, as the Vulcans claimed a 69-58 victory over Lock Haven at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 14-8 overall with an 11-7 mark in league play. The Vulcans currently have a two-game lead for fourth place in the divisional standings with four games remaining in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 8-13 this season behind a 7-11 conference record.
Johns registered her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 24 points (16 in the second half) and a career-high 16 rebounds (nine offensive). She shot 9-of-22 from the field and six-of-nine from the free-throw line while playing 38 minutes. Johns currently ranks second in the PSAC in scoring with a career-high 18.8 points per game after collecting nine 20-point games.
Luckett posted 24 points (15 in the first half) on 9-of-17 shooting while adding five rebounds and three steals. She has now recorded five 20-point games this year, including four in the last six games. Sophomore guard Ryah Gadoson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) finished with 10 points and freshman forward
Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake Lehman) collected six points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench.
Cal U jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game before Lock Haven answered by scoring eight-straight points to take an 8-4 lead with 14:26 remaining. A putback by Johns at the 10:11-mark brought the Vulcans within four points, 16-12, before a traditional three-point play by Adamshick cut the deficit to 16-15 with just under 10 minutes left before the break. The Bald Eagles countered with five-straight points to take a 21-15 lead before the Vulcans battled back to trim the deficit to 27-25 at the 3:43-mark. Consecutive baskets by Luckett gave Cal U a 29-27 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the half before taking a 33-28 lead at halftime.
Two jumpers by Johns started off the second half, putting the Vulcans up 41-32 at the 17:29-mark. A jumper by Gadson gave Cal U a 47-38 lead with 14:22 remaining before Johns grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a lay-up at the 10:09-mark to extend the lead to 12 points, 57-45. Luckett made a three-pointer to give the Vulcans a 63-49 lead with 6:20 left to go and Johns made a free-throw at the 3:25-mark to give Cal U a 15-point lead, 67-52.
After shooting 50 percent in the second half, the Vulcans finished the making 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the field and just 20.0 percent (3-of-15) from beyond the arc. Comparatively, the Bald Eagles shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field and 25.0 percent (two-of-eight) from three-point range. Cal U out-rebounded Lock Haven by a slim 42-41 margin, while both team scored 30 points from inside the paint. The Vulcans forced 32 turnovers in the win and scored 28 points off turnovers on Saturday.
Freshman Lysa Mealing recorded her first career double-double in the loss, posting 11 points and 15 rebounds (six offensive) off the bench. Bald Eagles guard Samantha Lane scored a team-high 13 points after making five-of-seven from the field.
Cal U starts a two-game road trip on Wednesday, Feb. 15, when it travels to face Slippery Rock at 6 p.m. The Vulcans have won each of the last 20 meetings against The Rock since the 2002-03 season. Live stats of the game will be available by clicking
