CALIFORNIA (Feb.1) – A double-double by senior forward
Steve Swiech (Greenock, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) was not enough on Wednesday night, as the Vulcans fell 65-62 to Edinboro at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team falls to 11-10 on the season and drop into a three-way tie for fifth place in the league standings with an 8-7 record. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 10-9 overall and are tied with the Vulcans at 8-7 in the divisional standings.
Swiech registered his second double-double of the year, fourth career, with 16 points (10 first half) and a season-high 13 rebounds (six offensive). He finished the game shooting 8-of-10 from the field and tied his career high with three blocks.

Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) also posted 16 points and added a team-high five assists. Juniors
Quentin Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and
Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) both tallied 10 rebounds, which marked a season high for Harding and a career high for Vann.
Cal U led 15-5 at the 11:15-mark after opening the game on a 10-2 run. A 6-0 run by the Vulcans extended the lead to 16 points, 23-8, with just over seven minutes remaining. Seven-unanswered points by Edinboro cut the Cal U lead to eight points, 25-17, with 4:10 left in the half. The Fighting Scots closed the half on a 7-3 run to bring them within two points at 28-26.
Six points by junior Isaiah Prince gave Edinboro the 32-28 lead to start the second half. Vann hit a lay-up at the 15:05-mark to give the Vulcans the lead back at 37-36. Six-straight points by Edinboro gave the Fighting Scots a 44-41 lead with 12:17 remaining. A three-pointer by senior
Chad Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) gave the Vulcans the lead back at 49-46 with 9:00 left in the game. A 5-0 run by Cal U put the Vulcans up 58-55 at the 4:20 mark. Back-to-back Edinboro three-pointers gave the Fighting Scots a 63-62 lead with 47.5 seconds remaining before two free-throws extended the lead to 65-62 with 10.5 seconds left.
Cal U shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field and 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from beyond the arc. In comparison, Edinboro shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the field while going 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from long range. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Fighting Scots by a 40-35 margin and scored 36 points from inside the paint.
Prince led the way for the Fighting Scots with 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the floor and four-of-seven from three-point territory. Senior Cory Somerville had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
