Vulcans cruise past Cheyney, 63-41

CHEYNEY, Pa. (Dec. 2) – The Vulcans extended their season-opening win streak to five games after earning a 63-41 victory at Cheney in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 5-0 overall with a 2-0 mark in league action. The Vulcans have started the season with five-consecutive victories for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign. Meanwhile, the Wolves remain winless this year at 0-3 overall with a 0-2 record in conference play.

Sophomore Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) scored a team-high 14 points and added three assists and four steals on Sunday. She ranks third on the team in scoring this year, averaging 12.6 points through five games after posting 4.9 points per game last season.

Senior Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) and sophomore Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) both added 11 points against the Wolves. Michael scored in double-digits for the fourth-straight game after making a trio of three-pointers for the third time this season. Kukolj collected eight rebounds (four offensive) on Sunday and has already eclipsed her rebound total from last year in just five games.

Junior guard Kate Seebohm (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) finished with seven points, six rebounds, five assists and six steals in the victory. Classmate Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) also scored seven points and posted a team-high 10 rebounds (seven offensive) off the bench.

Leading 14-9, the Vulcans scored seven-straight points in just over a minute to take a 21-9 lead on a three-pointer by Seebohm with 7:22 left in the first half. Cheyney countered with a 6-0 run before Cal U answered with a 12-2 run over four-plus minutes to take a 33-17 lead on a pair of free-throws by Seebohm with 1:39 remaining. The Wolves then scored the last four points in the first half, as the Vulcans took a 33-21 lead into the break.

Cal U stretched the lead to 17 points, 40-23, in the opening minutes of the second half on a three-pointer by Michael with 15:47 remaining. Following a basket by the Wolves, the Vulcans scored six-unanswered points to take a 46-25 lead following a lay-up by Hines with 11:50 left in the game. Cal U maintained its 20-point lead for the virtually the rest of the game, leading by as many as 26 points, 63-37, on a lay-up by Kukolj with 1:56 remaining.

The Vulcans struggled from the field in the win, shooting 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the floor and only 20.0 percent (5-of-25) from beyond the arc. Cal U also made just 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from the free-throw line.  In comparison, Cheyney shot a 31.7 clip (13-of-41) from the field and 78.8 percent (15-of-19) from the charity stripe. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Wolves by a 42-31 margin and scored 24 second-chance points.

Cheyney junior Cristina Jordan posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort.

The Vulcans open PSAC West play on Saturday, Dec. 8, when they host two-time, defending-league champion Edinboro at the Convocation Center, starting at 1 p.m.
