Cal U snaps skid at Cheyney, 64-59

CHEYNEY, Pa. (Dec. 2) – Senior guard Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) scored 23 points behind five three-pointers, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team snapped a  three-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon with a 64-59 victory at Cheyney in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 2-3 overall with a 1-1 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Wolves fall to 2-2 this season behind a 1-1 record in conference action, including a victory over nationally-ranked IUP yesterday.

Lowe posted 23 points after shooting 8-of-16 attempts from the field, including five-of-seven from beyond the arc. He also collected two rebounds, two assists and three steals in the victory. Lowe scored a combined 48 points over the last two days after entering the weekend averaging 9.3 points per game. The Columbus native is the first player to score at least 20 points in back-to-back games since guard Jerial Nixon in January 2010.

Sophomore guard Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) added 12 points and four assists in his second-straight start. Junior Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds in his first career start, while classmate Anthony Lytle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) posted seven points, seven rebounds and four assists on Sunday.

After a combined five lead changes in the first half, Cheyney took a 32-30 lead at the break. The Vulcans mounted a 7-0 rally early in the second half to take a 41-36 lead on a three-pointer by Lowe with 14:23 remaining. After Cal U expanded its lead to seven points, Cheyney mounted a 10-4 run over nearly four minutes to cut the deficit to 57-56 with 3:57 left to play.

The Vulcans expanded the lead to 59-56 on a lay-up by senior Mitchell Weedon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) before the Wolves tied the game at 59-59 on a three-pointer 2:05 remaining. Cal U answered with a trey by Lowe on the next possession before neither team was able to score for over a minute. Cheyney was then forced to foul in the final minute of the game and Fortune made a pair of free-throws on four attempts in the closing seconds to seal the 64-59 victory.

Cal U finished the game shooting 43.4 percent (23-of-53) from the floor with a season-high seven three-pointers while making 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Cheyney shot a 40.0 clip (24-of-60) and 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from three-point territory. The Wolves out-rebounded the Vulcans by a 38-32 margin and committed 17 turnovers in the loss.

Cheyney freshman Brandon Norfleet posted 15 points and four assists on Sunday, while senior Jayvon Beaty finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Vulcans open PSAC West play on Saturday, Dec. 8, when they host Edinboro at the Convocation Center, starting at 3 p.m.
