Vulcans earn win over Bloomsburg, 71-68

LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. (Dec. 19) – Sophomore Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) scored the go-ahead three-pointer with 51.1 seconds left on Wednesday night, as the Vulcans posted a 71-68 victory over Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 4-4 overall with a 3-2 mark in league play. The Vulcans earned their first victory against the Huskies since the 2007-08 season, as they lost the last two meetings by a combined eight points. Meanwhile, Bloomsburg falls to 2-7 this season and remains winless in conference action at 0-5 this year.

Senior guard Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) scored a team-high 17 points on 6-of-15 attempts from the floor, including three-of-five from beyond the arc. He also totaled three rebounds and six assists on Wednesday. Lowe has averaged 22.4 points in the last five games after entering play with four-consecutive 20-point games.

Making his third start of the year, Fortune finished with 14 points after making five-of-seven from the field, including three-of-four from long range. Junior Anthony Lytle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) recorded his second double-double of the season, posting 11 points and 10 rebounds against the Huskies.

Bloomsburg led the entire first half on Wednesday and took a 28-22 lead into the break. The Vulcans opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 31-30 lead on a fastbreak lay-up by Fortune with 16:36 remaining. Bloomsburg regained the lead with four-straight points before Cal U took a 37-35 lead on a jumper by Lowe with 14:33 left to play.

The Vulcans stretched their lead to five points on a three-point play by senior Mitchell Weedon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) before the Huskies trimmed the deficit to 51-50 with 9:29 remaining. Cal U answered with eight-consecutive points capped by a fastbreak lay-up by Harding before Bloomsburg took a 65-62 lead at the 2:41-mark. Lowe answered with a game-tying three-pointer and the Huskies made a pair of free-throws to take a 67-65 lead with 1:34 left to play. Lowe again responded with a game-tying jumper before Bloomsburg took a 68-67 lead on a free-throw.

Fortune gave the Vulcans a 70-68 lead with 51.1 seconds left before Lytle made a free-throw to stretch the lead to 71-68 with 22.7 seconds remaining. Bloomsburg then missed two potential game-tying three-pointers in the closing seconds.

Cal U made an astounding 72.0 percent in the second half to finish the game shooting 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the floor. In comparison, Bloomsburg shot at a 40.7 clip (24-of-59) from the field and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free-throw line. The Huskies out-rebounded the Vulcans by a 40-28 margin behind 17 offensive rebounds.

Junior Dontahe Jordan, the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Year, finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Classmate Lorenzo Christmas added 14 points and three steals in the losing effort.

The Vulcans are idle for over a week before traveling to face Tiffin (Ohio), a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC), on Dec. 30 at 3 p.m.
