CALIFORNIA (Nov. 17) – Behind five players scoring in double-figures, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team earned a 102-55 win against Glenville State on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 2-0 this season with both wins coming against the top two teams in the preseason West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) poll. Cal U recorded its first 100-point game in nearly three years, as it last accomplished the feat against Shippensburg on Dec. 11, 2009. Meanwhile, the Pioneers fall to 2-1 this season after advancing to the WVIAC Championship in both 2011 and 2012.
Senior guard
Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) scored a career-high 24 points on seven-of-nine shooting from the field, including three-of-three from beyond the arc, and seven-of-seven from the free-throw line. She also added four rebounds and a career-high eight assists in the victory. Michael totaled 18 points in the first half on Saturday, which was only one point shy of equaling her previous career high.
Junior forward
Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) posted 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting and five rebounds off the bench. Fellow junior
Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) established a career high with 17 points on 7-of 14 attempts from the floor. She also collected five rebounds and three blocks against Glenville State.
Sophomore
Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, while adding four assists and three steals. Fellow sophomore
Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia Xavier) finished with 10 points and six rebounds in the victory.
With the game tied at 11-11, Cal U mounted a 12-2 run over four-plus minutes to take a 23-13 lead following a lay-up by Michael with 11:02 left in the first half. Michael scored 13 of the team's first 23 points. Glenville State cut the deficit to six points, 23-17, before Cal U responded with a 10-2 run capped by a three-pointer by Michael with 3:29 remaining before the break. The Vulcans later closed the half on a 14-3 run with a combined 11 points by Antonenko and Kukolj to take a 47-26 lead at halftime.
The Vulcans opened the second half with a commanding 18-4 run in the first five-plus minutes, taking a 65-30 lead on a lay-up by Mahady with 14:27 left to play. Cal U later held Glenville State scoreless for over five minutes, mounting a 15-0 run to stretch its lead to 92-44 with 4:51 remaining. The Vulcans eventually led by as many as 50 points, 100-50, before finishing with 102-55 victory.
Cal U finished the game shooting 51.3 percent (40-of-78) from the floor and 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Glenville State shot just 19.5 percent (15-of-77) from the field and committed 26 turnovers in the loss. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Pioneers by a 53-51 margin and scored 58 points from inside the paint.
Junior forward Kenyona Simmons led Glenville State with nine points and eight rebounds, while classmate Ginny Mills was limited to eight points after averaging 23.5 points through the first two games of the year.
The Vulcans are idle for over a week before traveling to face Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pa., on Nov. 25 at 2 p.m.
