CALIFORNIA (Nov. 14) – Behind four players scoring in double-figures, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team opened the season with an 84-55 victory against Penn State-Fayette on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
The Vulcans have their season-opener in three-straight years and eight times in the last 10 campaigns. The Roaring Lions, who return four starters from last year, open the season at 0-1.
Redshirt junior forward
Anthony Lytle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) and sophomore guard
Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) both led the team with 16 points on Wednesday. Lytle, who played at Edinboro from 2009-11, made six-of-six attempts from the floor and was four-of-four from the free-throw line. He also collected four rebounds and three steals against the Roaring Lions. Fortune shot five-of-five from the field and five-of-five from the charity stripe in 19 minutes off the bench. The New York native also collected four assists and three steals in the victory.
Freshman guard
Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) added 11 points in his college debut and sophomore forward
Jeremy Posey (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Senior guard
Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) recorded seven points and a team-high six assists, while freshman
Art Cook (Cleveland, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) led the team with nine rebounds (three offense) off the bench.
With the game tied at 7-7, the Vulcans scored eight-straight points to take a 15-7 lead with 12:31 left in the first half. Penn State-Fayette answered with back-to-back baskets before Cal U mounted a 16-1 run over four-plus minutes to take a 31-12 lead with 5:55 left before halftime. The Vulcans took a 34-19 lead at the break after scoring 16 points from inside the paint.
Cal U shot a stunning 73.9 percent in the second half, stretching its lead to 20 points, 64-44, with just over nine minutes left. The Vulcans then mounted a 16-4 run behind 10 combined points by Cook and Lytle over five-plus minutes to expand their lead to 80-51 with 3:17 remaining.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 57.4 percent (27-of-47) from the field and converted 24-of-35 attempts from the free-throw line. The Roaring Lions were limited to 28.6 percent (20-of-70) from the floor after making just 16.7 percent (5-of-30) from beyond the arc. Cal U out-rebounded Penn State-Fayette by a 44-33 margin and scored 25 points off turnovers.
The tandem of Brandon Cunningham and David Winns combined to score 31 points in the losing effort.
Cal U is idle for over a week before returning to action on Nov. 24 when it travels to face West Virginia Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
