Cal U downed at Millersville in shootout

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Nov. 1) – Despite taking an early lead, the Vulcans battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie and lost 8-7 in a shootout against Millersville in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team finishes the season with an 11-6-2 overall record. Meanwhile, Millersville moves to 9-8-1 this year and advances to face top-seeded Mercyhurst in the league semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 3.

The Vulcans took an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when sophomore Jeffrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany/SIT Tübingen) scored his sixth goal (unassisted) of the season. Millersville tied the game just over three minutes later when Ryan Rohrer scored off a pass from Jaime Vazquez.

With the game tied at the end of regulation, the Marauders tallied six shots in the first overtime before the Vulcans collected three shots in the second overtime.

Sophomore Brad Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), freshman Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt (Iowa)) and senior Nemanja Visekruna (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Thomas More) each made their shootout attempts as the score was tied after three kicks, 3-3. After both teams missed their fourth attempt, junior Christopher Karns (Mars, Pa./Mars) responded with a goal to even the score at 4-4. Both teams were unsuccessful on their fifth attempts before the Vulcans kept even with the Marauders on the next three shots with goals by senior Billy Wilson (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Andrew's and St. Brides), sophomore Chris Hunkele (Hampton, Pa./Hampton) and senior Ryan Slaby (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic). Millersville took an 8-7 lead on its 10th shootout attempt before the game ended on a missed Cal U opportunity.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mitch Mack (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) finished the game with six stops in his first action in two-plus weeks. Millersville sophomore Brad Benzing collected two saves in 110 minutes of action.

In the game, Millersville out-shot Cal U by 24-16 margin with an 18-12 edge during regulation. The Marauders also held an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Vulcans qualified for the PSAC Tournament in back-to-back years for the first time since 2003-05.
